Mini World Cup comes to turf

AV Minor Soccer is hosting the Mini World Cup from April 30-May 1.

More than 50 teams from all over Vancouver Island will take over soccer pitches in the Alberni Valley this weekend as AV Minor Soccer hosts the Mini World Cup April 30–May 1.

The event kicks off Saturday at 10 a.m. with a Parade of Nations at noon on Echo Minor, organizer Linda Rhodes explained.

Games will wrap up at 5 p.m. Saturday and continue on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“We have six local teams,” Rhodes said.

A month before the event she already had 50 teams signed up. “I anticipate we will have 70 to 80 taems. That’s 800 to 1,000 players for two days.”

The Mini World Cup tournament rotates between Port Alberni, Campbell River, Nanaimo, Parksville and Ladysmith.

“We did this in 2010 and we had 69 teams,” Rhodes said.

Each team will play two games per day. “It’s all for fun. There are no trophies at the end of it,” she added.
