Minor hockey is profitable once again, even though it isn’t gaining new players.
The Nelson Minor Hockey Association earned $10,280.73 in revenue for the 2016-17 season, according to financial statements made public at its annual general meeting Tuesday. It’s registration numbers meanwhile held steady at 166, up one player from last year.
The association had previously recorded losses the last two years as a result of losing two major midget teams as well as a board mandate to lower registration fees.
Outgoing minor hockey president Tony Maida credited treasurer Brad Ouchi for his work securing a provincial gaming grant of $31,500 that kept NMHA in the black.
“The grant helped us out big time, and we did lots more fundraising …,” said Maida. “I think it’s good and solid. Financially it’s probably in a better state than when I first came on.”
Julie Lepine will take over for Maida as president, while Lisa Upper moves into the vice-president role following the resignation of Danny Jewitt.
Maida grew up playing minor hockey in Nelson. His two sons later followed suit, while Maida served on the board for 22 years and seven as president. He plans to stay involved by offering advice as a past president and perhaps get involved in coaching.
“You’ve got to give back, right?” he said. “I don’t mind giving back, and I don’t mind volunteering. It’s good and healthy for you to be part of a good board like this.”
