MINOR HOCKEY: Lumby Stars capture home Classic

There’s no place like home for the Lumby Bannister GM and Irly Bird Building Stars.

The village’s Pee Wee hockey team won its own Monashee Classic tournament on the weekend, going undefeated, which included a 3-1 win over the Kamloops Ice Hawks in the championship game.

Goal scorers were Bryden Murray, Ryder Quibell and Heart and Hustle award winner Mia Maltman.

The Stars pulled off a tough-fought 3-2 semifinal win over the Ridge Meadows Rustlers. Quintin O’Neill scored twice, earning the Heart and Hustle honour, Murray had the other goal while Jace Catt had two assists. Also chipping in helpers were Riley Dewhirst and Tori Maltman.

Lumby opened with a 3-1 win over the Kelowna Predators. Goalie James Wraight earned the Heart and Hustle Award. Wraight was stellar all weekend. Goals came from Jack Laventure, O’Neill and Catt.

The Stars edged the Kamloops Brawlers 3-2 with Murray scoring twice and Catt the other. Murray won the Heart and Hustle award.

Murray had two more goals in a 5-2 win over the classy Williams Lake Rubber Ducks.

Heart and Hustle winner Laventure, Quibell and Kolby English, with his first of the year, earning the team’s Hard Hat, also scored for Lumby. Faith Seehaver picked up an assist.

Five Star Awards Rebels tamed the DCT Chambers Cougars 4-1 in North Okanagan Bantam Super League hockey action at the Priest Valley Arena Saturdaay.

Cole Grevatt scored two goals for the Rebels, including the winner shorthanded.

Rebels captain Maisun Ang-Hamilton and Caleb James, set up beautifully by Sapion Joe and and Quinn Soon, scored the other goals for the Rebels.

Ashton Pede – with a Mario Lemieux-like goal – opened the scoring for the Cougars.

Bryce Lauer was named Five Star Awards Player of the Game for his rock-steady play on the Rebel blueline.

Keziah Broyden’s third-period marker lifted the North Okanagan Knights to a 3-3 tie with the Vernon Talon Benefits Thrashers in Midget Super League hockey action at the Enderby Arena.

Warin Buzzell and Devon Rempel had the other goals for the Knights, who had Caedon Bellmann in net.

Michael Pusey had a goal and an assist for the  Thrashers while other goals went to defencemen Dakota Becker and Braydie Allen, who wired a shot from the blue line top corner.

The Thrashers got 2+1 from Aiden Rivard Sunday at the Civic Arena in a 6-2 win over the Winfield Bruins.

Mac Gilchrist, Pusey, Brendan Horsfield and Chris Neuhaussen had the other goals in front of Garrett Adams.

Corbett Office Plus Kings crowned the Nedco Blazers 4-1.

After the Blazers opened the scoring, Landon Currie responded for the Kings, scoring twice. Brogan Houston scored on a scramble in front of the net and Liam Hennig finished the scoring with a top-shelf snipe.

Alyssa Racine and Tavyn Best each supplied three assists for the office crew to support the strong goaltending of Ethan Huizinga.

Colton Schaper-Kotter scored for the Blazers, set up by Reid Lawrence and Dexter Weiten.

Vernon Butcher Boys Devils and Salmon Arm played to a hard-fought 3-3 tie in Pee Wee Super League play.

Mackenzie Miller, Brady Devries and Dylan Hatalak scored great goals for the Devils, who received amazing goaltending from Kristi Vassberg.

The White Knights finished fifth with a win over the Black Knights in North Okanagan’s atom tournament.

Alex Hart, Waylen Stowards, Kohen Pounder, Kade Blair and Aidan Wattie scored for the White Knights in a win over their city rivals.

Brayden Rypkema recorded a shutout as the White Knights downed Winfield Bruins 15-0. Cody Collette led the offence with four goals, Wattie scored three, Stowards and Hart added two each and singles went to Blair, Parker Levesque, Ashley McAvoy and Pounder.

The Knights fell 4-3 to Kamloops with Blair scoring twice and Wattie adding a single, and also dropped a 4-1 decision to Semiahmoo with Blair scoring the lone North Okanagan goal.
