The Miri Piri Wrestling Championships return to the mats this Saturday inside the Ag-Rec Building.
Hundreds of young grapplers in over a dozen different weight divisions from all over the province will battle it out for glory.
Senior boys, senior girls, junior boys and schoolboy wrestlers kick off competition at 10 a.m., with elementary boys and girls getting underway at 11:30 a.m.
Division finals are expected to wrap up in the late afternoon.
Event organizer Chanmit Phulka said that he expects the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit – British Columbia to return again for 2019. The unit had a big presence at last year’s event.
“We are expecting Jag Khosa from the CFSEU again this year as we had tons of positive feedback from kids and parents in attendance,” Phulka stated. “We are proud to team with the CFSEU anti-gang/drug task force and promote sports for our youth.”
Phulka said he also expects Mayor Henry Braun and Coun. Kelly Chahal to address athletes and fans prior to the opening of the tournament.
The event is named after Abbotsford’s Miri Piri Wrestling Club, which has been training young grapplers since 1996.
