Mission runner Jeremiah Johnston was the first across the finish line on Marine Drive Sunday, winning the Sandcastle City Classic 10K.
Johnston, from Mission, completed the course – which began at 130 Street and 24 Avenue in South Surrey – in 31 minutes, 41.59 seconds, five seconds ahead of Burnaby’s Colin Wallace, who placed second.
Surrey’s Drew Nicholson – who finished seventh in last year’s Sandcastle Classic – also made the podium, finishing third in a time of 33:52.05. White Rock runner Chris Barth was fourth – and first in the male 40-44 age group – after clocking a time of 34:05.58.
Vancouver’s Carey Nelson rounded out the top five, finishing five seconds back of Barth.
The top female runner on the 10K circuit was Vancouver’s Kristin Smart, who ran the route in 38:07.02.
Her time was more than a minute faster than that of Susie Lang-Gould, who was the second woman across the line.
Other Surrey finishers included Josh Weiss (20th), Don Evanson (30th), Neil Yarmoshuk (33rd).
In total 260 runners took part in the annual race, which is the seventh race in the Lower Mainland Road Running Series. It’s also part of the Timex BC Road Race series.
