The M&K Ready Mix Demons went 2-2 in the Vernon Atom Icebreaker Hockey Tournament last weekend.
The Demons stopped the Kelowna Ice Crushers 4-3 in their opener, getting snipes from Shaelyn Cecchini, Christopher Bond, Kevin Morgan and Jordyn Morris with Morris burying her own rebound for the winner.
In Game 2, Brady Horton, Morgan and Cecchini each scored with Dawson Martian earning a key assist in a 5-3 loss to the Kamloops Roughnecks.
The Hope Wildcats then tripped up the Demons 3-1 with Ronan Bedard scoring from Gage Stoll.
The M&K crew finished by shutting down the Lakeside Accuprint Thunder 3-0 with Tyler Hamilton in net.
Bond, unassisted at 13:24 of the second period. and Morgan and Morris, within a two-minute span in the third, handled the Demons’ offence.
Tireless work and tremendous defensive efforts by Morris, Stoll, Ryan Vandesande and Ty Louis paid off for the Demons. Heart and Hustle awards for the Demons went to goalies Kassidy Schaper-Kotter and Hamilton, Stoll and Bedard.
“Overall, I’m very pleased with how the Demons came together for this tournament,” said coach Mike Stoll. “They are really starting to be aware of each other and play as a team. I couldn’t be happier about the way they are backchecking and passing and I’m really excited to see how the rest of the season plays out.”
Hope got a goal with 25 seconds left to clip the Langley Raiders 4-3 in the A final. The Denny’s Ice Rockets of Vernon defeated Penticton for third place. No details were reported.
The Vernon Mighty Ducks lost 7-2 to Kamloops in Sunday’s game for fifth place.
The Ducks started by getting ambushed 11-2 by Langley with Maisun Ang-Hamilton getting their only two goals.
Vernon bounced back with a 8-0 win over the West Kelowna Ice Dogs with Jacob Wettlaufer pulling the hat trick and Cody Becker bagging 2+1. Ang-Hamilton, Andrew Kostitsen and Jackson Sampert rounded out the scoring.
The Penticton Venom then upended the Ducks 5-3 with Jacob Tarasenko, Alyssa Reilly and Ang-Hamilton handling the offence.
In Pee Wee action, Finnian O’Keefe scored five times as the Sub City Donair Devils downed the Sicamous Predators 5-1 Sunday at Civic Arena. Jordan Foster and Dalton Steinberg shared the goaltending for Sub City (5-1-1).
Nick Mitchell had 2+3 and Aaron Jodoin also scored twice as the Bannister GM Flames torched the Knights 6-1 Sunday at Wesbild Centre.
Sam White, with 1+2, and Chase Batchelor also scored in front of a red-hot Reece Hawthorne. The twin tower pairing of captain Brooke Berube and Alyssa Racine was magical on the 6-2 Flames’ back end. Hayden Minamide replied for the 4-4 Knights.
The Salmon Arm Salmar Classic Titans were four minutes away from celebrating their first Pee Wee victory of the season on Grey Cup Sunday. Reid Lawrence spoiled the party.
Lawrence’s unassisted goal with 3:15 remaining gave the Stevenson Mechanical Blues a 5-5 tie with the Titans at the Wesbild Centre. Cody Webb, with two unassisted markers, and Zack Laranjo, on a set-up by Halle Higgins-Wilson, staked the Blues to a 3-1 first-half lead.
After Salmon Arm rallied to tie the game, Kael Black buried a Braydie Allan-Webber rebound behind the Titans’ Ben Tinling to give the Blues a 4-3 lead. Two goals 18 seconds apart by the Titans’ Garrett Mitchell early in the third gave the Titans a 5-4 lead. Sam Knox and Dylan Blazek shared the netminding for the 6-2-2 Blues.
In Bantam Super League action, the first-place Interior Savings Flyers went to 8-0 by bouncing the Salmon Arm Blades 7-1 Saturday at Wesbild.
Adam Roemer (3), Jake Pelletier (1+2), Braeden Doak, Jaden Steinke and Cole Bradley led the offence, while Cordell Oppenheimer was solid on defence.
The Flyers got 1+2 from both Adam McIvor and Darnell Hauca in an 8-3 exhibition win over Kelowna Sunday at Wesbild. Roemer, Tiege Doughty, Doak, Brendan Horsfield and Kaylan Lawrence also scored with the tireless and skilfull Lawrence snapping his scoring drought.
In other Bantam play, the Corbett Office Plus Spartans iced the Winfield Bruins 3-1 and rallied past the DCT Chambers Coyotes 6-5.
Alex Laurila flipped home a rebound off a Cathou Bauml shot as the Spartans took the lead in Winfield. Evan Winther extended the lead early in the third on screened flip shot from the point. Kevin Sullivan scored an empty netter.
In Sunday’s Grey Cup night thriller at Civic, Paul Rogers provided the winner and the Spartans’ first lead when he scored off a crazy deflection on a point shot with three minutes remaining.
Reece Schroeder (2), Nick Mann, Laurila and Sullivan, with a gorgeous roof daddy snipe, handled the 3-4-1 Corbett Office attack in front of Chris Moore.
The 7-2 Coyotes got goals from Dex Elders (2), Chris Nielsen, Riley Bos and Cole Martin in front of Jacob Holland and Foufoulas. Ailish Curran was strong playing forward and defence for the Spartans.
The Scotiabank Lightning zapped the North Okanagan Knights 5-3 Saturday in Enderby.
Landon Currie (2), Sean Reid, Sam Frisby and Branden Lehoux collected goals for the Lightning, who got stellar goaltending from Rowan Wood and Isaac Waldemaras, who gained an assist on Frisby’s goal in the third.Taylor Cousins had two helpers.
