The sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) will have a new commissioner and new regulations in the province.

The B.C. government has approved a regulation setting May 30 as the effective date for the Athletic Commissioner Act to come into force and for the BC Athletic Commissioner to begin operations.

This new provincial regulatory regime will work to enhance the safety of participants in professional boxing and mixed martial arts (MMA) through consistent regulation, said a government press release.

The commissioner will replace local commissions that currently regulate these sports in their communities, providing a more consistent regulatory approach.
