Moffat leads Big White Racers at national juniors

Ryan Moffat, Meg Cumming and Simon Bernard compete at Nakiska

A trio of Big White Racers took to the slopes at Nakiska Mountain Resort Feb. 24 to 27 for the U18 national junior alpine championships.

Ryan Moffat, Meg Cumming and Simon Bernard competed in the four-day FIS event that featured Super G a single run speed event, Giant Slalom and Slalom both of which are two run combined time technical events.

On Day 1,  Moffat, starting in the 93rd position, put in a strong effort to finish 22nd overall, 3.96 seconds behind the leader.

On Feb. 26, Moffat finished 14th overall out of 84 racers in the GS. Although he fell in his second run he did manage to complete the two-run race with a combined run 4.94 seconds behind the leader. Cumming and Bernard each unfortunately fell and did not finish the race.

On the final day, Cumming laid down a strong run in the women’s slalom finish in ninth place with a two run combined time of 1:48.23, 7.90 seconds behind the leader. Moffat had his best finish of the series with an eighth place result in the men’s Slalom. He put down the fourth fastest time in the second run to finish with a two- run time of 1:46.88, 4.18 seconds behind the leader.

“I’m really happy with the skiing of all our group,” said head coach Derek Trussler. “All three showed good speed and competitive results against an extremely fast field. It’s reassuring to know that Ryan continues to prove to be among the fastest for his age in the country.”

The threesome will compete this weekend at the Kuerig Cup in Rossland.

BWR to CanAms…

Thanks to their performances at the Teck Alpine provincial ski races Feb. 26 to March 1, six Big White Racers have qualified for the U14 CanAms later this month.

Over the three-day provincial event at Vernon’s Silver Star Resort, the conditions were ideal for racing with hard packed snow, steep terrain, demanding runs with perfect visibility and a high level of enthusiasm from these energetic 12- and 13-year olds.

Earning six of the 40 spots available were: Hallie Jenkins (F), Jaxon Slaney (F), Amy Jorgenson (F), Luke McMillan (M) and Zander Torres (M).

The CanAms will be held March 19 to 22 in Revelstoke.
