Abbotsford’s Jared Mortensen pitched seven innings in a winning effort against Colombia in Canada’s second match of the preliminary round in men’s baseball action at the 2015 Toronto Pan Am Games.
Mortensen tallied five strikeouts in the 10-4 victory over the South American side. The 27-year-old allowed two home runs and was charged with three earned runs.
The men’s team will close out preliminary play today (Friday) July 17, against the U.S., who sit tied with Puerto Rico in third. Mortensen may see the mound today as the pitcher is well rested, having last played against Colombia on Sunday.
Canada faced Puerto Rico yesterday afternoon and defeated the Caribbean country 11-4.
After five games, the Canadian men’s team sit atop the pool as the only undefeated squad, with 37 total runs scored and 11 against — the lowest runs against number among the seven teams
Canada beat the Dominican Republic in their opener, July 11, 4-1. In game three, Canada coasted past Nicaragua, 9-1 and the following day, on July 14, they beat Cuba, 3-1.
The semifinals start July 18, with the gold medal match scheduled for Sunday.
