For the Townsman
After a long break at Christmas, the Mount Baker Secondary Junior Girls basketball team started the new year with a huge tournament win in Okotoks, Alberta.
In their first game, playing against Dr. E.P. Scarlett from Calgary, the team displayed tremendous hustle and determination early in the game on defense and offence. The Wild grabbed a 26-7 in the first quarter and playing hard all game with balanced scoring, won 79-31.
They went on to play William Aberhart High School, also from Calgary, and knew that they were in for a battle as they had only beat them by 10 in a previous tournament.
Coming out with all pistons firing, the Baker defense held their opponent to only two baskets in the first, building a 24-4 lead.
As the Baker girls settled in for a long tough game, they went into halftime up 45-23.
The third quarter was the same story offensively and they kept their lead 59-36.
In the final quarter, Aberhart started a comeback. They got to within 10 points, but with a lot of heart and will-power, the Baker girls took the win with a final score of 71-58.
Having played a tough and grueling first game, the girls were tired as they headed into a final against a much taller team. There was no stopping the Wild however, and by the end of the first quarter they were up 17-10.
With their full court press and the offensive skills to score, they remained up at half-time 34-18. Although at one point in the third the Lakers climbed back to within 12, the rotation of Wild girls maintained their lead going into the fourth 47-27.
Containing their opposition from scoring inside and rebounding hard on offensive and defensive, the Baker girls won 60-39 and securing first place overall in the tournament.
The Junior Boys basketball team also played in a tournament this past weekend, travelling to Creston and coming in second overall after losing to Creston in the finals.
This coming weekend the Junior Girls are playing in a tournament in Fernie and the Junior Boys are doing the same in Sparwood. MBSS will be hosting a Senior Boys tournament on January 27 and 28.
