Mount Brenton Golf Course hosts 40th annual men’s amateur championship

So far, 130 golfers have signed up for the Mount Brenton Men's Amateur Golf Tournament this weekend in Chemainus.

Three weeks after the ladies lit up the course at Mount Brenton Golf Course, the men will gather on the greens to participate in the 40th Mount Brenton Annual Amateur Golf Tournament.

Tournament chairman Ken Norman said 130 participants are currently registered, and there is still room for plenty more.

“We’d like to get at least another 50 players if we can,” he said.

In addition to a swinging good time on the course’s challenging but fun 18 holes, participants have a shot at three hole-in-one prizes assigned to one specific hole on the course: a new car from Ken Evans Ford, a $2,500 Ladysmith Home Hardware gift card and $10,000 cash sponsored by Best Western.

“We’ve got a lot of good sponsors in the local business [community] that help us out,” Norman said.

To celebrate the occasion, all players will receive a “First Tee-off” commemorative divot repair tool.

A “horse race” will be held the evening before the tournament. Players with high and low golf handicaps are partnered and must work together to get the lowest score possible to avoid being eliminated at each hole. The last three teams remaining are paid out.

“You take turns hitting the best ball, and it’s like a scramble,” Norman explained. “Depending how many are in the horse race, you lose so many players at each hole.”

Last year’s tournament attracted 192 players.

“Everything went pretty smooth, so we’re hoping for the same this year,” Norman said.

Norman said the tournament is open to all and offers a friendly, competitive atmosphere for non-pro players.

“The majority of the guys are avid golfers to begin with,” he said.

The entry fee for the Mount Brenton Amateur Golf Tournament is $120 and includes two meals. The horse race begins at 4 p.m. sharp on Fri., Sept. 7, with the tournament to follow Saturday and Sunday.
