On May 27, over 50 locals participated in the Fernie Mountain Bike Club’s (FMBC) Mud Muncher kid’s race.
Participants were given the option of tackling easy, intermediate or advanced courses that had them riding through town on a community-wide scavenger hunt.
The riders were challenged with skill-testing questions at various checkpoints around the course. Some of the questions related to bike safety. Another asked participants to identify the current mayor of Fernie.
Once they’d finished, all participants were treated to a free brownie at The Loaf.
“The kids get a chance to all ride together and we’re a big riding community,” said FMBC volunteer Sam Sedlowsky.
The kid’s race was part of FMBC’s Spring Bike Blitz, which was an unofficial kickoff to the Elk Valley’s mountain biking season. The event also included a barbecue and bike swap.
The Mud Muncher will be followed by Little Critter Races, which will take place on the second Monday of every month until September.
The Critter races are geared to riders 12 and under. Entrance is free for FMBC members.
