Kelowna’s Team Toshido MMA has been busy over the last month making its presence felt, not just in the ring but online.
Shane Campbell, who recently moved to Toshido MMA from Edmonton to further his goal of competing in the UFC, became an overnight sensation with his TKO win at the World Series of Fighting (WSOF) over Albertan fighter, Derek Boyle. The bout aired on NBC Sports.
After landing a devastating body kick, Campbell performed a ‘Hadouken Fireball’ move, made famous by the arcade game Street Fighter. The Hadouken finish quickly went viral, racking up close to one million views online in just days.
Team Toshido’s Matt Dwyer, just days after Campbell’s viral finish, went on to win a $50,000 ‘Performance of the Night’ bonus at UFC Fight Night 61 in Porto Alegra, Brazil. Dwyer stunned the Brazilian crowd with a ‘Superman Punch’ KO, over the heavy favourite, Ultimate Fighter Brazil finalist, William Macarino in the first round.
This was the first Superman Punch KO in UFC history, and the video quickly went viral racking up close to one million views to date.
“I am humbled by the team’s success,” said Team Toshido’s head coach, David Lea. “It’s always our goal to win, but to win in such a spectacular fashion that it’s viewed and shared by millions of people is just incredible. “
Also last month, amateur fighter, Tanya Nijjar, made her MMA debut at the UCL Championships in Merrit.
Nijjar made short work of her opponent, scoring a TKO win in under a minute of the very first round.
