Campbell River wrestling has another successful day of competition Saturday, Jan. 16 at the Campbell River Invite in the Carihi Gym.
In the team results, the Phoenix girls placed first of 10 teams in the Junior division, while the boys placed third. In the Senior division, the Timberline boys placed third, the Carihi Girls placed fourth, and the Carihi boys placed fourth.
It was a fun day of wrestling that saw Campbell River crown multiple champions. From Carihi, Alex Jinda, Ali McPhee, and Ering Geddes won gold medals, as did Conlan Foy from Timberline. Also winning were, from Phoenix, Cash Simon, Hailey Ricard, and Quin Golobar, as well as Southgate’s lone entry, Riory Young.
An exciting culmination at the end of the tournament featured three challenge matches, seeing champions of individual weight classes wrestle to determine the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament.
Conlan Foy stepped up to wrestle 2015 Cadet National silver medalist Aaron Badovinic of ADSS (Port Alberni). Badovinic (70 kg) won the weight class above Foy (66kg) at this tournament.
In front of everyone at the tournament, in the last match of the day, Foy defeated the larger Badovinic 10-0, showing why he is considered one of the best wrestlers in the province. For the win, Foy won a Most Outstanding Wrestler Championship Belt.
Coach Jason Kerluck reflected thoughtfully on the day, “We feel that we run one of the best tournaments of the year here. I am very proud that we had such a strong showing from both our Junior and Senior athletes. Seeing Conlan step up and pick apart the bigger wrestler was a treat to watch. He really earned that belt today.”
The teams have three tournament remaining before the Island Championships on Saltspring Island.
“We are looking forward to having a strong showing at Islands, and carrying that momentum through to the Provincial Championships,” said Carihi coach Scott McKenzie.
