The Immaculata Mustangs earned some hardware, but it wasn’t enough to repeat as B.C. AA girls high school basketball champions.
The Mustangs’ quest for back-to-back provincial gold medals in Langley was halted in the semifinals in a 78-66 loss to Seycove.
Immaculata, ranked No 2, went on to take care of St. Thomas More in the bronze medal game with a 86-69 victory. Ashlyn Day paced the Mustangs in the 3rd place game with 33 points, while Kate Johnson added 20. Mackenzie Horst was named the Mustangs player of the game.
Immaculata opened the tournament with a pair of convincing wins, 98-44 over Little Flower Academy and 78-48 over Holy Cross.
Day was named to the provincial championship first all-star team, while Johnson and Nicole Hart were named to the second team.
Meanwhile, the Okanagan Mission Huskies battled their way to an 11th place showing out of 16 teams, defeating Ballenas 72-68 in the 11-12 game.
The Huskies also earned the most sportsmanlike team award.
Owls AAA girls
The KSS Owls settled for 12th-place finish at the B.C. AAA girls basketball championship in Langley.
The Owls, ranked No. 4 heading into the tournament, got off on the wrong foot, losing to No. 13 Panorama Ridge 63-61 in the opening round.
After a convincing win over Gleneagle, the Owls lost a heartbreaker by three points to Charles Best with 1.4 seconds left in overtime.
KSS finished the championship with a 1-3 record, falling in the 11th/12th place game, 77-65 to New Westminster.
Despite the final result, coach Lisa Nevoral was pleased with her team’s effort at provincials and all season long.
“Although this was not the finish we were hoping for, the girls played very hard all week,” said Nevoral. “One tournament does not define our team and overall the season was a great success as we reached many of the goals that we had set out for ourselves.”
