Mustangs sting northern teams

Vernon Watkin Motors Mustangs strike Pee Wee Rep gold in Williams Lake.

The Vernon Watkin Motors Mustangs ran wild in the north last weekend, striking gold at a Pee Wee Rep hockey tournament in Williams Lake.

In the championship game, Vernon cruised past Williams Lake 5-0 on goals by Conner Johnstone, Brady Morzocco, Powell Connor, Matt Kowalski and Dean Whitcomb. Jason Shaegic, Owen Belliveau, Ethan King and Riley Swiskoski netted assists.

The Mustangs went 6-0, opening the tourney with a 9-0 shellacking of Fort St. John.

Belliveau led Vernon with a hat trick, and Swiskoski (2) Austin Caldwell (1+2), Levi Danbrook and Shaegic rounded out the scoring.

Grady Caton (2), Whitcomb (2), King, Kowalski, Reece Schroeder and Dylan Sedlacek collected helpers.

In the first of three Saturday games, the ‘Stangs stopped Prince George 5-2 on a two-goal effort by Matt Kowalski.

Marzocco and Levi Danbrook, each with a goal and assist, and Ethan King completed the scoring. Swiskoski and Caldwell had helpers.

Vernon then manhandled Salmon Arm 9-1. Johnstone had a hat trick, Caldwell and Danbrook each fired deuces, and Belliveau and Whitcomb pocketed singles. Assists were provided by Shaegic (2), Sedlacek and Sam Eggert.

Johnstone turned his second hat trick of the day as Vernon bounced host Williams Lake 7-1.

Danbrook, Caldwell, King and Whitcomb rounded out the Mustang attack, with assists to Swiskoski, Kowalski and Connor.

The Mustangs used a 2+1 performance from Marzocco to clip Quesnel 8-2 in their final preliminary game.

The goalie tandem of Conor Webb and Shane Meadahl were strong when called upon, but enjoyed an unusually quiet weekend in net.
