Maggie Mustangs senior girls volleyball coach Katie Reum sees great potential in this season’s team.

The talented Mustangs opened by winning eight of 12 sets in the Thompson Rivers University tournament (Kamloops) Sept. 23 to 24. Reum said most of the girls haven’t played together so they are learning each others styles and new positions.

“They are hard workers and we are confident that once they get comfortable with their role on the team, and each other, they will find success,” said Reum.

The Kamloops tournament was about testing the players in different positions and line ups to see where best they could support the team. The Mustangs coach said this early in the season each game helps the team become stronger and the players learn how each other plays. Reum did some trial and error with the lineups and feels she and co-coach Alannah Stewart have determined which positions and line ups best showcase each player and the team as a whole.

With the Mustangs being comprised of grade 11s and 12s, it became clear to the team they have many leaders.

“Our experienced seniors have been really helpful to our Grade 11s making the big change from junior to senior volleyball,” said Reum. “Veteran players Farnaaz Johal, Mahkaila Lusch  and Laura Ciancone are great at taking charge on the court and leading the team.”

For a second straight season the Mustangs are playing in a Kelowna league. Because of that, they don’t have any home games. Last week the Mustangs defeated Summerland Secondary, Okanagan Misson Secondary and lost a close match to George Elliot Secondary. The Mustangs are currently at four wins and one loss on the season.

The Mustangs next action is Oct. 5 against Kelowna Christian School then play in a tournament at UBC-O Oct. 7 to 8.
