Mustangs win Coca-Cola Classic

The Vernon Watkin Motors bounced the Chilliwack Bruins 4-1 Sunday at Civic Arena.

The Vernon Watkin Motors bounced the Chilliwack Bruins 4-1 in the A final of the 46th Coca-Cola Classic Invitational Pee Wee Hockey Tournament Sunday at Civic Arena.

Jarred Feist, with a deuce, Bennett Kuhnlein and Cash Anderson scored for the defending champion Mustangs. Anderson and Feist each registered empty-netters in the final minutes as the Chiefs pulled the goalie for a sixth attacker.

Owen Hopcott scored midway through the third period for the Bruins, who earlier lost a 4-3 thriller to Vernon in Thursday’s opening game of the eight-team tournament. The Mustangs pocketed the Amy Myles Memorial Trophy.

The West Kootenay Rapids of Nelson-Castlegar upended the Seafair Islanders of Richmond 8-3 in the John Kuly Memorial B event final.

The California Wave toppled the Cochrane Rockies 6-2 in the Mickey McMahon Memorial C event championship, while the Sherwood Park Spartans stopped the Montana Thunderblades 4-2 in the Mickey Ogasawara Memorial D event final.

Former NHLers Dean McAmmond, Eric Godard and Jerred Smithson, all of Vernon, along with Hockey Hall of Famer Lanny McDonald, head coach of Montana, all addressed players at the Saturday night banquet at the Vernon Lodge.
