Nanaimo teens were terrific on the track this week at Island championships.
Eight athletes won Island titles and many more had top-three finishes at the Vancouver Island High School Track and Field Championships, held Wednesday and Thursday at the University of Victoria.
Wellington’s Hassy Fashina-Bombata was a double winner, finishing first in both the 100-metre dash and the 200m in senior girls’ competition. Also in the senior division, Marina Andersen of Nanaimo District Secondary School won the 1,500m race walk.
Junior competition was highlighted by Karly Dickenson of Wellington winning the Island title in the 3,000m run and Steen Rasmussen of John Barsby Secondary School winning the 100m hurdles. As well, Makayla Mitchell of NDSS placed first in the javelin and Ethan Katzberg of Barsby won the hammer throw. Dover Bay’s Olivia Lundman won the race walk.
Nanaimo’s other Island track and field champ is Madison Paugh of Wellington, who won the triple jump in the Grade 9 girls’ division.
The B.C. High School Track and Field Championships will be held June 1-3 at Langley’s McLeod Athletic Park.
