A Nanaimo high jumper is a national champion and headed to worlds.
Mike Mason, who is from Nanoose Bay and joined the Nanaimo Track and Field Club this season, won gold Saturday at the Canadian National Track and Field Championships in Ottawa.
Mason cleared 2.25 metres on his second attempt to finish ahead of Django Lovett at 2.15m and Emile Oliver at 2.10m.
“It was a rewarding win for Mason, who confirmed his good form ahead of the world championships,” noted a Nanaimo Track and Field Club press release.
Mason had already qualified for worlds by jumping 2.30m earlier this season, and will compete at that event in August in London, England.
Derek Drouin, the current world and Olympic champion, didn’t participate in nationals due to injury but is anticipated to compete in London next month.
