Nanaimo Men’s Amateur tees off this week

The Nanaimo Men’s Amateur makes its long-awaited return this week.

The three-day tournament at the Nanaimo Golf Club will be held Thursday through Saturday (Aug. 4-6).

“We’re pretty excited to host the tournament,” said Michael Cook, the club’s men’s captain.

There was no 2015 tourney because of the job action at the golf club, but this year’s field is almost filled up, with 190 players registered as of last week.

Victoria’s Saare Adams will be back to defend his 2014 title, and there will be several other contenders including Nanaimo’s Sandy Harper.

“The tournament’s been running since 1974 and looking at the history, the scores have been pretty close to par or near par, so it’s pretty good calibre of golf,” Cook said.

Spectators are welcome. Tee times are at 7:25 a.m. on Thursday and Friday, and the leaders will start their final rounds Saturday sometime around 1:30-2 p.m.
