The host Isfeld Ice lost 89-80 to Wellington Secondary of Nanaimo, Tuesday night in a triple-A senior boys high school basketball league game.

The two North Island teams had met last weekend at the Santa Slam tournament in Victoria, where the Ice won 74-69.

In Tuesday’s game, Isfeld held a 20-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, but the game was tied at 41 by the half.

“It was a really good game and went down to the last three minutes,” Isfeld coach Dikran Zabunyan said. “They executed better down the stretch and we did not.”

Ice co-captain Temwa Mtawali, who fouled out with two minutes remaining in the game, scored 47 points.

“We finished the year 9-4 as I anticipated we would, given our schedule and injuries,” Zabunyan said.

After the Christmas break, Isfeld returns to the floor Jan. 7 against Ballenas Secondary in a league game in Parksville. Three days later, the boys will be in Port Alberni to compete at the Totem Classic Tournament.
