National medals for South Surrey gymnast

Treyson Cerrato wins gold, silver at Canadian Gymnastics Championships in Montreal

Gymnast Treyson Cerrato can add two more medals to his ever-growing collection after a successful run at 2017 Canadian Artistic Gymnastics Championships last month in Montreal.

The 15-year-old South Surrey resident competed in four invididual events at the competition – floor, vault, parallel bars and high bar – but did not compete in the all-around competition due to what Surrey Gymnastics Society coach John Carroll called “a little injury.”

Nevertheless, Cerrato still had a successful meet, winning gold on parallel bars and snagging a silver medal on high bar. As well, B.C.’s National Open team won an overall bronze medal.

“We had a very successful competition,” Carroll said.

Cerrato had qualified for the national meet back in April, after winning a provincial championship in the National Open category.

After that competition, which was held in Port Coquitlam, Cerrato told Black Press that the win came as a welcome one.

“I don’t really want to say I was surprised, but I was real happy because I hadn’t won a meet this year and I wasn’t expected to win,” he said. “A lot of people who heard my name called were kind of surprised.”

At provincials, he cruised to victory on the high bar – which he also won in Montreal – which Carroll said is perhaps the young gymnast’s best event.

“He’s kind of unstoppable on the high bar,” Carroll said after the provincial victory.
