NDCC to host Festival of Programs

Twenty-nine sports groups will be on hand at the free event next Wednesday

Ever wanted to swim like an Olympian? How about dancing like a Scot, or boxing like a champion?

The Nelson and District Community Complex is hosting its first Festival of Programs next Wednesday, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Twenty-nine groups will be on hand to give visitors a chance to try a variety of activities such as hip-hop dancing, boxing and synchronized swimming.

Admission to the NDCC is free during the festival, which recreation co-ordinator CJ Blye said is being held to promote and celebrate local sports clubs.

“The idea is really just to bring exposure to our groups and show there is a real partnership between the NDCC and our community groups,” she said. “Because we really want them to know that they are valued and we need them to keep doing what it is that they are doing.”

Blye said visitors will be encouraged to try as many activities as they wish, while groups will have tables set up in the arena’s concourse with registration information.

“There’s no commitment. So if you walk into the pool and you’re in the synchro for 15 minutes and you’re like, ‘That was really fun but I’d really love to be skating as well,’ there’s no commitment that you have to stay in any area. The whole facility is free so it will be really great that people can just go from one to the other.”

Here’s a schedule of planned activities:
