Nechako-Kitamaat Development Fund Society (NKDF) continues to provide support to the mountain bike trail initiative in Burns Lake.
In May, NKDF provided the Burns Lake Mountain Biking Association (BLMBA) with $23,288 to construct phase one of the Stearns Creek Canyon Trail. The new 4.2 kilometre trail connecting the Burns Lake Bike Park to the South end of Long Lake is now complete and ready to ride.
The second phase of the trail will connect Long Lake to Stearns Canyon, with the final phase connecting these two segments to the top of Boer Mountain.
The resulting Stearns Creek Canyon Trail will be a 17.5 kilometre world class cross country trail.
NKDF also supported BLMBA in 2008, helping complete the Burns Lake Bike Park. In 2010, financial assistance provided by NKDF facilitated completion of the ‘Shawn Flow Trail’ off the top of Boer Mountain.
BLMBA president Kevin Derksen said, “Without support from NKDF, our mountain bike trail initiative would not be where it is today. The mountain bike trail initiative brings both economic and social benefit to the community.”
“The Stearns Creek Trail is an excellent example of what’s possible when members of a community work together toward a common goal,” said Rosanne Murray, NKDF chair.
The Boer Mountain Recreation site North of Burns Lake now offers cyclists more than 25 kilometres of world class downhill and cross country trails.
