The U17 Nelson Selects girls soccer squad will be playing for provincial bronze on Sunday.
The local squad hung on for a 2-2 tie today against Vernon United to finish round robin play in the Girls B Cup Provincial Championships in Chilliwack with a record of 1-1-1.
It was a nerve-wracking second half for the locals, but despite giving up a second half penalty, the squad defended well to preserve the tie.
The U17 girls have had a terrific tournament, and could easily be playing for gold, but an opening game loss relegated them to second place despite outplaying their opponents in that match
The U15 Selects girls squad won its first game of the tourney to finish with a record of 1-2. The locals defeated their arch rivals the Kootenay South Storm 3-0. They will now play for fifth place in the final day of action Sunday.
Nelson’s U13 Girls Selects lost 2-0 to the Powell River Predators on Sunday to finish with a 1-2 record. The local squad will now play for fifth and sixth place.
Nelson’s U14 girls (0-2-1) took on the Chilliwack Attack today. Nelson held a 1-0 lead at the half, but had to settle for a 1-1 tie.
In Richmond, two Nelson boys squads are playing in the Les Sinnott Memorial Cup Provincial Championships.
The U18 squad took on the Kamloops Blaze today and battled to a 1-1 draw. The boys finish with a record of 1-1-1 and are waiting for other results from their tight division to establish what they will e playing for on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the U15 Nelson Selects defeated the Prince George Timberwolves 1-0 to improve its record to 1-1-1. They will play for fifth or sixth place on Sunday.
