Nelson takes tennis title

The Nelson Tennis Club hosted and won the Kootenay Cup last weekend

Nelson is the tennis centre of the Kootenays.

The Nelson Tennis Club rallied in its final matches against Creston to win the Kootenay Cup on Sunday. The host team had to win four of its last six matches for the title, which was played out under a hot sun at the club.

“This was the first annual Kootenay Cup, and we hosted strong teams from Trail and Creston,” said tournament organizer and Nelson tennis coach Matt Martin.

“It was a great day of tennis. There were some gruelling matches in the heat, and in the end Team Nelson came away with the victory.”

The tournament also included players from Trail. Next up for the club is the NTC Club Championship and Social, which runs Aug. 11 to 12, followed by the West Kootenay Open on Aug. 25 to 27.
