New trail races are emerging for running and outdoor enthusiasts in Terrace.
Organizer Sherrie Hamer said she started up the new Ted-Squared race this year to expose trail runners to a network beautiful trails.
“There are some really nice trails and I wanted people to get a chance to try them out,” she said.
“It is totally a trail run, as opposed to the King of the Mountain, which is partly on the road and partly on the mountain.”
The new Ted-Squared trail race takes over an hour and starts at the Spring Creek Watershed, running over Steinhoe, onto the Terrace mountain trail and to the mouth of the Johnson Trail.
“This is an amazing trail that takes you through some challenging, but breathtaking scenery, along the way you will hear the trees creaking & moaning, as well as birds, and the odd screech from mountain bikers,” said Hamer on Facebook.
The race is named in honour Ted Johnston, an avid mountaineer in the early 1900s who settled a homestead in the Spring Creek area. It also honours Ted Hamer as a longtime farmer whose family settled Ferry Island in the early 1920s and who loved hiking the local forest.
Seven local runners aged 30 to 60, came out to compete in the Ted-Squared race August 23.
Top overall winner was Tara Irwin, who finished in 1:01:35.
Second overall and top-male was Brent Webb at 1:04:10.
Top woman over 40 was Donna Hull at 1:06:25.
Top male over 60 was Rod Gee at 1:27:28.
Hamer says next year she plans to organize the Ted-Squared race in July, and expects more people to come out earlier in the season.
She also plans to organize another 21-kilometre race in the same area.
