Nine was the winning number for Komox Men’s Real Baseball League teams Sunday at Highland Fields.
May 25 action featured the Fisher Realty Twins topping the Investors Groups Expos 9-8, Toneff Funeral Services Blue Jays edging Edwards Avenue Athletics 9-8 and Brian McLean Yankees defeating Happy’s Source for Sports Indians 9-5. The Mindset Wealth Mariners tacked on one more run as they drubbed the Daryl Robbins CGA Nationals 10-2.
On Tuesday, May 27 the Athletics trounced the Twins 19-8. On Wednesday, May 28 the Mariners made it two in a row with a 6-2 win over the Indians. A fine pitching performance by starter Dean King and sterling defence led by middle infielders Mike Boyd and Brook Petersen (who turned three double plays) led the way for the M’s.
KMRBL action resumes Thursday (May 29) night at Highland when the Expos take on the Nationals in a 6:30 p.m. start. All eight teams are in action Sunday, June 1 at Highland with the Athletics taking on the Nationals at 9:30 a.m., the Yankees meeting the Expos at 12 p.m., the Twins tangling with the Indians at 2:30 p.m. and the Blue Jays jousting with the Mariners at 5 p.m.
Along with Sunday’s games, the league is hosting a fundraiser for Markus Yule, a young lad who is battling cancer. “Our league will be playing its regular scheduled games, but will host fundraising events throughout the day with all the proceeds going the Yule family,” said KMRBL president Jake Plante.
“Come out, watch some great baseball and help support this young man in his battle with cancer. We hope to see you at the park. Bring your chairs, we have limited seating,” Plante said.
There’s a tight battle for first place in the early going of the 2014 season. The Yankees and Blue Jays are tied for top spot with 3-1 records while the Nationals and Indians are both just half a game back at 2-1.
