BC School Sports has informed schools throughout B.C. that the provincial high school golf championships have been cancelled this year, as have the mountain biking championships.
Lyle Chapman, athletic director at Salmon Arm Secondary, explains that the number of schools registered to play golf has been dwindling over the past two weeks.
The numbers are in response to the BC Teachers’ Federation decision to no longer carry out volunteer activities such as coaching.
Chapman noted, as an example, that the Fraser Valley normally has 35 teams registered for golf. As of April 25, they had just two teams registered.
Usually at this point in the year, SAS has 13 teams underway, but right now there are just four and they are being community coached. They are: senior and junior girls soccer, junior boys rugby and girls rugby.
The teams that have been cancelled, along with golf and mountain biking, include: senior and junior badminton, senior boys rugby, senior and junior tennis, and senior and junior track and field.
“We’ll have to wait and see what happens before September,” Chapman said. “I’m crossing my fingers to hope it’s resolved.”
