Nordic athletes pocket medals

Sovereign Lake Nordic club members sizzled in two events hosted by Nickel Plate Nordic in Penticton last weekend.

Sovereign Lake Nordic club members competed in two events hosted by Nickel Plate Nordic in Penticton last weekend.

Saturday featured a mass start classic event under sunny skies and cool temperatures. A total of 19 participated from the Vernon club with the following placings:

Boys 7.5km age 14-17-2nd Eric Embleton, 3rd Finn Plummer; Girls 7.5km age 14-17 – 2nd Emma Smedley; Girls 15km age 16+ – 2nd Samantha Loewen; Women 30km age 18-29 – 1st Ivy Strother; Women 30km 30-39 – 2nd Sarah Purslow; Men 30km 40-49 – 2nd Glenn Bond; Women 30km 50-59 – 1st Debbie Born.

On Sunday, 31 skiers from Sovereign took part in the Tech Okanagan Cup series second race.  The interval start free technique delivered many podium finishes for the club including:

Atom Boys (2) 1km – 2nd Dawson Bond; Atom Boys (3) 1km – 2nd Liam King; Pee Wee Boys (1) 2km – 1st Mitchell Bond, 3rd Nate Hardy; Pee Wee Girls (1) 2km – 4th Annika Czenczek; Midget Boys (1) 3.5km – 1st Ian Oliphant; Midget Girls (1) 3km – 3rd Danica Ariano; Midget Girls (2) 3km – 1st Paige Latta, 3rd Sydney Embleton; Juvenile Boys (2) 5km – 3rd Eric Embleton; Juvenile Boys (1) 5km – 1st Carson Bassett, 2nd Aidan Andrews; Juvenile Girls (2) 5km – 1st Hannah Mehain, 2nd Michelle Metza; Juvenile Girls (1) 5km – 2nd Emma Smedley, 4th Samantha Loewen.

The local Masters were also successful bringing home their own hardware: Masters Women 10km age 30-39 – 1st Jen Bond, 2nd Sarah Purslow; Masters Men 15km 40-49 – 2nd Glenn Bond, 3rd Darren Derochie; Women 10km 50-59 – 1st Mae Hooper; 3rd Felicia O’Gorman; Men 15km  50-59 – 2nd Paul Hardy. The next event is the B.C. Midgets race being hosted by Larch Hills Nordic Club, Feb. 8-9, in Salmon Arm.
