Numbers on the rise for festival

On Saturday, June 25 more than 500 dragon boat paddlers descended on Marine Peace Park

On Saturday, June 25 more than 500 dragon boat paddlers descended on Marine Peace Park to take part in the 13th annual Shuswap Dragon Boat Festival.

Eight more teams were added to the festival this year, making for a packed schedule. In total there were 24 races throughout the day across three divisions.

In the survivor category, which featured teams made up entirely of cancer survivors, Bust’N’Loose from Kelowna won, while the Pink Piston Paddlers from Salmon Arm claimed second and the Spirit Warriors from Kamloops finished third.

In the women’s division Kelowna’s Fire on Water paddled to the top spot, followed by Curves from Kamloops and Seraphins from the Fraser Valley.

In the mixed division, which required at least eight women in a boat, Das Kraken from Surrey won, while Fort Fusion from Fort Langley just edged out Kids Mixed from Kamloops.
