Vancouver College spoiled home-court advantage for Oak Bay at the first basketball tournament in the school’s new gym.

The Fighting Irish outlasted the Bays 70-62 in Saturday’s senior final of the Gary Taylor Classic.  The Fighting Irish, ranked fourth in B.C., got some revenge against No. 2-ranked Oak Bay, who won Vancouver College’s Emerald Classic the week earlier.

The Bays Atlas St. Paul Butler was named tournament MVP.

The Bays earned a spot in the final with an 88-57 win over Holy Cross of Saskatoon. Oak Bay opened the tournament with a convincing 102-61 win over the Belmont Bulldogs.

Vancouver College punched their ticket to the finals with a 64-59 win over the St. Michaels University School. The Blue Jags finished third in the Classic with a 67-59 win over Holy Cross.

Vancouver College also took the junior division with a 79-46 win over Oak Bay.

St Michaels downed Cowichan 57-54 to nail down third place for the juniors. Jovanic Castillo from Vancouver College was named junior tournament MVP.
