Seven runs in the final two innings ultimately led to the end of the Okanagan College Coyotes’ season, as they fell 8-7 to the Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs in the quarterfinal of the CCBC championship tournament Sunday in Lethbridge.
The Coyotes and Dawgs traded single runs in the first inning. Yotes’ starter Joel Lamont then shutdown the three-time defending champs for the next three innings.
Meanwhile, the Coyotes offense went to work scoring twice in the top of the second inning, then three times in the fourth.
The Dawgs finally got to Lamont in the fifth, as the right hander gave up three runs, to bring them within two with a 6-4 score.
The Coyotes offense responded with a run in the top of the sixth, restoring the three run lead.
But in the bottom of the inning Lamont allowed two more runs, before being pulled in favour of Marcus Drewry. The pitching change didn’t seem to bother the Dawgs as they scored two more off Drewry, both unearned.
In his final collegiate game Garrett Wiese helped lead the charge with a pair of hits and two RBIs. Tyler Pentland recorded two RBIs and Aaron Barrett and Braedan Heyland each had two hits.
The Coyotes, who finished the season-ending tourney at 2-3, outhit the Dawgs 9-5, but three defensive errors at key times did not help matters.
The Dawgs went on to win their fourth straight CCBC title after beating the top ranked TRU Wolfpack 5-1, who received a bye to the championship game after the round robin.
The Coyotes headed home following their loss to the Dawgs.
