Oceanside to host softball provincials

Unfortunately, all matches will be played in Nanaimo

Oceanside Minor Softball is hosting the the Under-16 ‘B’ Provincials Softball Championships on July 14-16.

While this is an exciting honour for minor softball, there is also a downside to it.

Unfortunately as hosts, OMS was not able to secure playing fields — at least four diamonds — to hold the games here in the area.

Organizers had to look outside of Parksville and Qualicum Beach to find a suitable venue. They were able to secure McGirr Sports Fields in Nanaimo. All the games will be played there.

OMS coach Ian Kellow said it’s disappointing but they’re pleased to have a place to host the big event.

There will be 16 teams from across the province that will be competing in the three day tournament. Oceanside will field two of their Rage teams in the tournament.

“We are very excited to host the provincials,” said Kellow. “It’s something we like to do every year.”

Kellow is not making any predictions about the Rage teams but he said anything can happen. Rage One has medalled a couple of times this year said Kellow and Rage Two has had a good showing at a couple of tournaments.

“Neither teams are favourites but either teams could get on a roll and win it,” said Kellow. “They are both good teams.”

The games will start at 8 a.m and the last game will be at 4:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and Sunday is still to be determined. The draws will be made on Thursday.

Kellow said they are looking for volunteers and anyone wishing help out please can email k.i.c.k@shaw.ca
