Offence bails out defence in Masters win

The Duncan Masters’ defence let them down on Tuesday night, but the offence more than made up for it in an 11-4 win over Wheatsheaf in Nanaimo Senior Men’s Fastball League action at Glenora’s Waldon Park.

The Masters made five errors to Wheatsheaf’s two, but outhit the visitors 7-2.

“Our hitting sort of made up for the errors we made,” Duncan manager Joe DiLalla said. “A lot of the time, if you give up four runs on four errors, you’re not going to win the game.”

Home runs by Dan Whiteford and Dave Wylie powered a six-run fourth inning. Whiteford was walked three times in the game, but made Wheatsheaf pay with a three-run shot when they had to pitch to him. Wylie went 2-for-3 on the night and finished with four RBIs.

Brothers Jamie and Trevor Gicas both went 2-for-4, Jaime coming home three times, and Trevor added a run and one RBI. Chris Moreside was held hitless, but both Wheatsheaf errors came on balls off his bat, and he scored the two times he ended up on base.

Craig Snyder pitched a two-hitter with four strikeouts, and none of the four runs were earned.

Several Duncan players could be part of an NSMFL all-star team that will play a pair of doubleheaders against the New Zealand national team at Cedar on June 23, part of the Black Sox’ warmup for the Bob Law Memorial Challenge in Vancouver on June 30-July 3. DiLalla is looking forward to the games, “even though we’ll probably get spanked.”
