Offence explodes but Huskers still lose

The Valley Huskers came close to their first win of the BC Football Conference season, but fell short in a 38-33 loss to Kamloops.

Keenan Godden had 192 yards receiving and the Valley Huskers offence had easily its best game of the 2016 BC Football Conference season.But it still wasn’t enough to get a win.The Huskers fell to 0-9 with a 38-33 loss at Kamloops Saturday night and have just one game left to try and avoid a second straight winless campaign.A Husker offence that was blanked by the Winnipeg Rifles last weekend responded by rolling up a season-high 445 net yards.Quarterback Noah Falconer led the charge. The second-year pivot had a bad completion percentage (19 of 44) but made up for it with big plays.Godden’s 192 yards came on just four receptions.One of them was a 65 yarder and the Abbotsford native found the endzone twice.Falconer spread the ball around to seven different receivers, throwing for 359 yards.But… he also served up four interceptions — one was returned 65 yards for a touchdown by Bronco defender Jordan Angove.The Huskers had some semblance of a running game in this one, with Ryan Beaubien ripping off 83 yards on 19 carries (4.37 ypc).Falconer scrambled five times for 18 yards and a major.The Husker defence had an up-and-down game.Kamloops led 10-3 after one quarter, 26-6 at half-time and 36-13 after three quarters. But the D locked it down in the fourth as the team staged its comeback.Defensive lineman Travis Dietrich contributed to the scoring, returning a fumble 26 yards for a TD.He and Cody Lawlor led the Huskers with five solo tackles apiece. Defensive back Tyler McStravick had an interception.Chilliwack kicker Liam Zurfluh had field goal boots of 26 and 17 yards.The last chance for a Husker win comes on home field this weekend as they host Nanaimo’s Vancouver Island Raiders.The Raiders upset the Okanagan Sun 14-8 Saturday, but otherwise have been the definition of average this year.
