Okanagan Rockets drop two in P.G.

Defending BCMML champs succumb to first-place Cariboo Cougars

A road trip to Prince George turned out to be as tough as expected as the Okanagan Rockets came up empty in B.C. Major Midget League action.

The first-place Cariboo Cougars swept a pair of weekend games from the Rockets, winning 4-1 on Saturday and 3-0 on Sunday.

Zach Erhardt scored Okanagan’s lone goal of the weekend on a power play.

The Cougars (17-2-1) lead the way in the BCMML, while the Rockets sit in third at 13-6-1.

Okanagan returns to home ice this weekend as the North Island Silvertips come to town.

The teams meet Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 10 a.m. at CNC.

Mac’s tournament…

For the eighth consecutive, the Rockets are bound for the prestigious Mac’s Midget AAA Tournament in Calgary.

The 2013 tournament was the most successful Mac’s in the Rockets history as they earned their first ever playoff berth, then reached the semi-finals on New Year’s Eve before bowing out to the eventual champions, the Finnish national team.

“The Mac’s has become an annual tradition for our hockey club,” said Okanagan general manager David Michaud. “It’s a huge priority for our club and it provides tremendous exposure for our players. Alumni like Josh Ellis and Cortlan Procter don’t win a national championship with the Yorkton Terriers last season without the Mac’s Tournament.”

The Mac’s features 25 male and 15 female clubs.  There was a distinct European flavour last season as both the Finnish and Swiss U17 National teams made an appearance.

The Rockets will depart for Calgary on Christmas Day, and typically kick-start the event on Boxing Day.
