Defending Okanagan and provincial boys AA soccer champs fall in tight final against Sa Hali

The Okanagan Mission Huskies were unable to defend their Okanagan title, but still earned a spot the B.C. AA boys soccer championship later this month.

As hosts of the Valley finals last weekend, the Huskies met Sa Hali in Saturday’s championship game under cool and wet conditions.

The Kamloops school broke a scoreless draw 10 minutes into the second half at Quarry Park, scoring on a penalty kick.

But the Huskies fought back, with Walker Shanks connecting on a free kick from 22 yards out to tie the score.

After five hours of gruelling soccer on Saturday, the teams then played through another 15 scoreless minutes of overtime.

Sa-Hali the won the game in a tiebreaker shootout to capture the gold medal, while OKM settled for silver. Both teams advance to provincials.

“Neither side showed any sign of weakness and a tie break  penalty shoot out was the only way to separate the teams,” said Huskies coach Tony Overton.

The Huskies defeated Revelstoke 6-0 and Valleyview 5-2 in the group stages Friday, then downed Summerland 5-2 in Saturday morning’s semifinal.

OKM will join Sa Hali as Okanagan reps at the provincial AA championship, Nov .18 to 20 in Burnaby.

The Huskies are the defending provincial champs, going unbeaten in 28 games in 2012.

The OKM Huskies are: D. Perry, A Glabus-Macleod, J. Overton, A. Humphreys, T. Hesketh, N. Van Demark, L. Larsen, R. Kienle, A. Obedkoff, S. McDonald, W. Shanks, N. Morel, U. Joshua, B. McDonald, M. Endres, C. Ambrosio, S. Young, J. Park, D. Wagner, B. Del Medico, and coaches are K. Shanks and T. Overton.
