Nelson soccer teams returned home with a silver and two bronze medals from the girls and boys’ provincial championships last weekend.
The Under-18 Selects girls went undefeated through round-robin play with two wins and a tie, but had to settle for second place after falling 2-0 to Prince George in the final Sunday in Surrey.
Head coach Chuck Bennett said he thought a goal in the first half would have changed Nelson’s fortunes in the final.
“There was a time when it was a big deal for this program just to get into a medal game,” he said. “Now these girls don’t know anything else but winning medals. This cements the fact that Nelson has a terrific program and the younger girls in our community can see the success we’ve had and build on it.”
Elsewhere, the U13 Selects finished fifth and the U16 team was sixth.
In Vernon, the U14 and U16 teams both earned bronze medals in boys’ play.
The U14 side won the third-place game with a 3-1 decision against Burnaby’s SBMC United, while the U16 team edged Prince George 3-2.
The U13 and U18 teams was also in action, with the U13 squad ending up fifth and U18s finishing seventh.
