The Subway Orange Dudes took sole possession of first place with a 5-1 victory over Subway Navy in Under 14/15 boys youth soccer play Wednesday night at Marshall #4.
Orange played a near perfect first half, creating many chances by spreading the field in possession while defensively applying constant pressure on the ball. Minyuk Son sacrificed his fresh haircut to open the score with a rare header.
Shortly after, a smart through pass by Joe Eggert landed in front of Matthew Jackson, who scored with his seldom used right foot. Son added a third goal from long distance, assisted by Carter Bosquet.
Navy responded after the interval with a nice goal after some slick passing. Navy got the upper hand for a few minutes, but Orange managed to put the game away when Grady Caton danced around three defenders before setting up Jackson. Caton scored the last goal after miscommunication in Blues’ back line.
Navy staged a late push but Orange’s backline – led by Kieran Webster and supported by Reid Casanova, Gaman Nijar and Joseph Bateman – kept Navy’s speedy forwards in check while keeper Joel Vandeleest showed great leadership organizing his defenders and anticipating on many through balls. Speedy Evan Winther stood out in midfield having his best game of the season.
Orange and Red ran to an entertaining 5-5 draw Saturday at Marshall Field #5.
Orange dominated the first 30 minutes and several beautiful passing sequences led to early goals by Cole Martin, Son and Bosquet.
Just before the break, Riley Bos, sporting a sweet new summer haircut, blasted a shot top corner for the Reds. Liam Hennig and Bos worked the ball up the wing and Langton Kersey converted early in the second half.
Orange – inspired by defensive workhorse Nijjar – upped the tempo and a bullet from Martin followed by a clinical finish by Garreth Birch, restored the margin to three goals.
Orange looked headed to an easy victory but the Reds staged a furious comeback resulting in goals by Bos, assisted by Hennig, Gavin Huggins, from Bos, and Seb Wenger, with the equalizer on a feed by David Heng.
Last chance of the game was for Orange after Sun Valley Sports Man-of-the Match Joe Eggert beat three opponents and sent in an inviting cross which was narrowly missed by two teammates.
Wilson Stewart and Colton Ryan Lewis were bold on the back line and Chris Aldrich used his speed big time for the Reds, who got several huge saves from Laughlin Byrnes.
The White Knights held off Team Green 4-3 in U14/15 action.
Andre Soto Alvarez, on a penalty kick in the sixth minute, Reece Hawthorne with a deluxe left footer, assisted by Sam Frisby, and Yididiya Tiessen, from Cooper McGeough, gave the Knights a 3-0 lead at 17 minutes.
Team Green roared back with goals by Ben Poulin in the 37th minute and Ethan Ehman at 64 minutes before Brendan Horsfield replied for the Knights six minutes later, from Winners Man of the Match McGeough. Poulin nicely finished a feed by Ty Cooke for Green’s last goal at 73 minutes.
In U18 girls play, Kidston & Co. and Subway battled to a 2-2 draw.
The Kidston crew leveled the score on a great cross to Natalie Moore in the dying seconds.
Midfielder Erin Hickman scored on a penalty kick for Kidston’s first tally. Dayle Strike was phenomenal in net, while sweeper Johie Burns was dynamic
For Subway, Sierra Benner made a great run up the wing and crossed it to Amy Parsons for the finish. The second goal was created by beautiful footwork from Danielle Butle
The Red Vultures and Team Orange drew 2-2 in U12 boys play.
The Dutch boys got out to an early 2-0 lead and despite numerous chances for the Vultures, held on to the lead at half time.
The Red Vultures scored early in the final half with a strike from Jakob Tarasenko, assisted by Brayden Riguidel and Reed Spence, who played his best game of the season so far.
With about seven minutes to play and a keeper switch to get some fresh legs on the field, the Vultures equalized when Ben Ethier made a great defensive play and a quick counter to Justin Brunton, who in turn fed Nicolas Petty.
The Armadillos bounced the Blues 6-1 in other U12 action with Zach Manthorne supplying the opening strike, assisted by keeper Jared Ross.
Manthorne, Sam Moore, Aiden Buckley, Ben Harrop and Griffin Fletcher completed the Dillo offence with assists coming from Rory Campbell (2), Fletcher and Travis Towers.
Team Gold shut down the Red Tornadoes 5-0 in U13 boys play Sunday. Eric Noren and Drew Mackenzie competed hard and had a few scoring chances for the Tornadoes.
The Blizzards posted a 1-0 win over Royal LePage Reds in U12 girls action, getting endless shots on net from midfielders Lauren Rollier and Grace Dae, who controlled the ball with their skillful foot work.
Winger Taylor Holcroft was unbeatable with some jukes and jives. Lottie Scott ruled the left flank with speed and great passing skills, Alanna Davey was a super sniper and Jennika Helmle enjoyed bountiful energy as she repeatedly struck the goal posts.
Joelee Smid pocketed the goal for the Blizzards, her first of the season. Kelsey Watts and Lisa DeBeer were marvellous on the back line, while Katelyn Holm had a quiet game as keeper for the shutout.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers iced Team White 1-0 in Royal LePage U11 play with Keaton Dick scoring in the 32nd minute. Team Red recorded their fifth shutout in seven games.
The Gold Rush got snipes from Cole Strilchuk and Lucas Wood (PK) in a 2-0 Saturday U13 boys win over Navy.
Calvin Brule, Sheldon Yakura, Liam (Archie) Cooper, Tanner Wright and Strilchuk handled the offence as the Gold Rush ambushed the Red Tornadoes 5-0 Sunday.
