The Ladysmith Chemainus Orcas Swim Club hosted its annual Swimathon Friday, March 8. Here, Rachel Woodruff, 11, swims her laps. Coach Dusan Toth-Szabo said the Orcas' hoped to take a giant bite out of their expenses by raising $3,000 through per-lap pledges. Swimathons are hosted by swim clubs across Canada every year, Toth-Szabo said, and the aim of every swimmer is to complete either 200 25-metre lengths — equal to five kilometres — or as many lengths as possible in a two-hour span. The Orcas swam 129.45 kilometres in total by the time the Swimathon was over. The Orcas would like to thank Safeway, which has been very supportive through continuous donations to the club, including the boxes of oranges that the parents cut up to hydrate and feed the swimmers over the two-hour Swimathon.
