Orphans rattle Canucks for rec league glory

R.E. Postill Orphans claim second Boston Pizza Hockey League playoff title in three years.

They ordered pizzas, drank a few sodas and took photos with the Boston Pizza Cup well past midnight Sunday.

The R.E. Postill Orphans celebrated their second Boston Pizza Hockey League playoff title in three years after an 11-4 win over the Teale Utility Canucks at Priest Valley Arena.

The Orphans won the best-of-three series opener 8-3 Saturday night at PV.

League scoring king Bryce Kakoske (46 goals and 94 points) supplied four goals and three assists Sunday night, linemates Leath Gare (3+4) and Dave Robinson (1+2) helping out big time.

Kakoske scored three times and set up two others as the speedy Orphans grabbed a 5-3 lead at the ice clean.

Ryan Kurbis added a deuce for the Postill gang, while 20-year veteran Rob Bauml added a single. D-man Jamie Johansson pocketed two assists in support of Jason Silzer.

Mike Burke, Darcy Quiring, Reid Church and Corey Disher countered for the Canucks, who had Steven Clark in net.

Gare bagged a pair of goals as the Orphans took the series opener. Brad Sindlinger earned 1+3, while other goals came from Grady Gare, Johansson, Bauml, Chris Bradford and Murray Vetsch. D-men Joe Dolling and Kakoske each netted two helpers.

Quiring, with 1+2, and Burke replied for the Canucks.

The fifth-place Orphans (18-12) were short a few regulars when they lost last year’s final to the Godard Excavating Predators. The Canucks placed sixth at 16-14.

Church and Jamie Caldow scored as the Canucks eliminated the regular-season champion MFC Bulls 2-1 last Tuesday night at Wesbild Centre. Troy Blais replied for the Bulls.

The Bulls stayed alive in the double-knockout format with a 5-1 win over the Lavington Sand & Gravel Rangers Monday night at PV.

Jeff Mushaluk (2), Calvin Berger, Dave Calvert and Travis Sanderson supplied goals for the Bulls, while Sean Andrews countered for the Rangers.
