The Little Tex Outlaws spoiled Dr. Lee Dental Clinic’s bid for an unbeaten season with a 3-1 victory Tuesday night at Marshall Field #4.
Jenn Kemper scored twice as the second-place Outlaws surprised the 13-1-2 Floss crew with a consistent attack, led by tireless striker Brittany Davison.
Kemper scored her first goal off a cross by Anita Rae, for the only first-half tally. She added the winner on a solo effort.
Christine Fraser completed the 8-6-1 Outlaws’ offence with a long shot over keeper Lisa Arrotta’s head, with 10 minutes remaining.
It was a hard-fought game with a few yellow cards issued by referee Wayne Aasen.
“It was a true team effort, especially considering we were missing some key players,” said Little Tex veteran defender Stacey Cover. “Our defence was outstanding. keeping Dr. Lee’s chances to a minimum and making the chances they did get hard.”
Monica Neilson, Cover, Kristy Anderson and Kelsey Krahn were all stellar on the Little Tex back line.
Davison made many hard runs and battled hard for the ball, just failing on a few scoring chances.
Jasmine Whitling and Rae ran miles in the middle in setting up several intelligent plays, while midfielders Lisa Stewart and Elina Huisken put in some great runs up the channel and delivered some beautiful crosses into the middle.
“We knew we were in tough without (Jacquie) Hansen, (Kirsten) Dodds and (Maddie) Kaneda,” said Dr. Lee coach Akbal Mund. “But, they played well; we tired in the end.”
Dr. Lee MVP Andi King scored midway through the second half on a great run down the middle after being set up by Ally Dodds.
Arrotta made four saves on breakaways and kept the game close. Dr. Lee’s season is over with a bye next week.
Glenn Power of Salmon Arm stopped the visiting North Enderby Celtics 4-0.
Kickers beat Drillers
In Masters Division play, the Chick Kickers fielded just nine players but managed to brush back the Goplen Drillers 5-3 at Marshall #1.
Marvellous central midfielder Crystal Bergman pulled the hat trick for the Kickers (14-2-2), while Jenny Garnett, who ran all over the field like a farm girl, managed to deliver one goal and one helper.
Tania Sladen headed in her own rebound off the cross bar to complete the offence for the second-place Chicks.
Lena Urquhart led the Drillers’ attack with two goals, her first coming at 14 minutes off a perfectly placed free kick from outside the 18-yard box by defender Jodi Peshko. Urquhart walked into the near post and easily tapped in the ball.
At 21 minutes, midfielder Vendela Wasylyk split the defenders and sent Claudia Cull a great through ball. Cull, who has become notorious for her speed, beat the keeper and deposited the ball.
Urquhart then scored her second of the night when Nancy Nickoli executed a great cross in front of the net. Midfielder Karinda McGaw settled the cross and fed a nifty pass to Urquhart, who nicely converted.
Longhorn blanks Merlot 4-0
The Longhorn Impact shut down the Shuswap Merlot 4-0 at Marshall #3 on a hot, hazy night due to the grassfire at The Rise.
Denise Bourdon pounced on a ball bobbled by the keeper and buried the Impact’s opening goal.
Janelle Smithson sent a beautiful shot from the corner flag soaring toward the net and nodded in top shelf by Edeen Ramsey.
The ever-consistent Myra McEwan, who unselfishly had been setting up the forwards all night, took a great feed from Jodi Hawthorne and zig zagged by the defenders before going low.
Kim Weibe finished the Longhorn attack when she teed up a pass from Suzie Andrews and beat the keeper high to the middle. Dawn Heiss started the play on a corner.
Longhorn keeper Julie Hamer faced one shot and distributed goal kicks out to the half line for endless opportunities.
TED United of Salmon Arm, looking to go undefeated for the season, grounded the fourth-place Controllers 5-1 at Marshall #2.
United scored in the first minute off a Controller miscue which allowed a striker in alone on keeper Mickey Templeton who had no chance.
A few minutes later, Jenn Spitzer of the Controllers put one over the bar on a partial breakaway. Later in the half, United added a pair of seeing-eye lasers that Templeton could only wave at as she aggravated a leg injury.
United (16-0-2) added a couple of quick goals to start the second half.
Emma Louie was on the end of a fine cross from Spitzer and she buried it from 20 yards for the Controllers’ goal. Spitzer was by far the most dangerous Controller as she made something happen with every touch of the ball.
Sherri Kineshanko and Ang Durfeld were the playmakers up front and just-back-from-holidays midfielder Michelle Mercer got stronger as the game went on. Centreback Brandie Hunter had a strong game filling in for Jodi Pope as did defender Michele Wernicke finishing the game in goal.
The Vernon Square Liquor Store NOU started the game with nine players due to Shelley Henry unable to leave her house near The Rise, but scraped out a 5-0 win over host Shuswap Kaos.
Carla Gibson jumpstarted things with a penalty-kick snipe after being brought down in the 18.
Sue Barss made it 2-0 on a bullet from the outside, followed by Gibson clicking again after a masterful through ball from Teresa Collins.
Char McNaught converted a feed from Barss, while Gibson completed the hat trick to finish the scoring. Dar Wiese got the shutout.
League barbecue to help Hayley
The women’s league will hold a wind-up fundraiser barbecue after Tuesday night games with proceeds going to the Hope for Hayley campaign.
Hayley McDougall, who suffers from crippling head pain, is the daughter of former NOU player Kathy Goldie. McDougall, who is virtually bed-ridden, requires expensive surgery in the U.S. More than $30,000 has already been raised.
Mund will be the head chef with hamburgers and weiners supplied by local keeper Yogi Kongsdorf of Fletcher’s.
