Captain Jayden Haftner scored on a short-handed breakaway in the second overtime to give the Oceanside Sharks bantams the championship of the Tim White Memorial tournament with a 5-4 win over the Nanaimo Timbermen May 29 in Nanaimo.
The Sharks had scored four first-period goals, only to watch host and top-seeded Nanaimo rally to force the extra periods. After the teams played a scoreless, five-minute overtime, the clock was set for a 20-minute running time sudden-death period. Oceanside was assessed a pair of penalties in the period and were working on a 5-on-3 penalty kill when Haftner broke free and raced in to cap a hat trick with his game-winner.
Adam Fyfe added two goals as the bantams finished 2-1-1 in the tourney. Korman Branter had two assists and Owen Baker, Jaden Koch and Xander Davidson each added a helper in the win. The title game win avenged a 5-0 loss by the Sharks to Nanaimo in the opening round of pool play.
The bantams also rolled to an 8-2 win over Campbell River and played to a 4-4 draw with Saanich.
