The Kelowna Owls are the first Central Okanagan team to hit the win column in B.C. high school football this season, but they had to work for it against their crosstown rivals.
A late touchdown by Nathan Eyre earned the Owls a hard-fought 20-13 win over the Rutland Voodoos in front of 1,000 fans Friday night at the Apple Bowl.
Eyre scampered 45 yards for the score with just 1:26 to play to snap a 13-13 tie.
KSS jumped on top early on touchdowns runs by Seth Canmpbell and Sean Gordon to take a 13-0 lead at the half.
But Rutland rallied back in the second half as Mitch Walz threw a pair of touchdown passes, one each to Justice Dovich and Keith Errington, to tie the game up.
For Rutland, Quentin McDowell rushed for 117 yards for the Voodoos, while Matt Walz had nine tackles on defense.
Despite the loss, Voodoos coach Peter McCall was pleased with his club’s effort.
“It was another week of improved play for us,” McCall said. “The boys showed tremendous heart and toughness for four quarters. We left it all on the field.”
On Friday, the Owls (1-2) will host St. Thomas More in a 6:30 kick off at the Apple Bowl.
The Voodoos will be in Abbotsford Saturday to play the W.J. Mouat Hawks.
Centennial 50 Mt. Boucherie 41
The Mt. Boucherie Bears came out on the short end of another shootout, losing 50-41 Friday to the Centennial Centaurs.
“Our passing game was awesome, but our defense struggled,” said Bears coach Mike Godwin. “We also had two bad snaps on our punt team which cost us.”
Quarterback Ben Minaker rushed for two touchdowns and caught another for the Bears in the second half. QB Josiah Joseph played in the second half after returning from an injury that kept him out since opening week against Vancouver College. Joseph completed 13 passes for 239 yards and three touchdowns. Receiver Spencer Humes caught nine passes for 168 yards and a TD. Humes now leads the province in receiving with 33 receptions for 532 yards and six majors.
The Bears (0-3) will return to action Friday at 4 p.m. when they host Lord Tweedsmuir at the Apple Bowl.
