This week CIS soccer standout Jaclyn Sawicki (Coquitlam) was named to Canada’s under-20 women’s team for the upcoming FIFA U20 World Cup taking place in Japan, Aug. 19 to Sept. 8.

Sawicki helped Canada qualify for the tournament back in March, when she scored a goal while starting in all five games of the CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship in Panama.

Canada’s plays its first two games in Kobe, on Aug. 20 and 23 against Argentina and Norway.

Earlier this summer, field hockey player James Kirkpatrick, an Oak Bay High grad, was also named to Canada’s junior national team (under-21) for the 2012 Junior Pan American Championship in Mexico, Sept. 10 to 23.

Kirkpatrick, a forward, has been a regular with the national junior program since his first appearance in 2010.

He’ll be counted on to provide some offence as Canada seeks a top two placing, which is needed to qualify for the 2013 Junior World Cup.
