The Vernon Panthers continue to turn heads within the B.C. high school wrestling community.

VSS pocketed three medals and some other solid showings in the Abbotsford Invitational Saturday at the Exhibition Complex.

“We have a number of boys ready to compete at the elite level here in Vernon, so this tourney gave us an idea of how we match up with the Coastal and Island teams,” said Panther coach Brad Wyse.

Freshman Valen Wyse dominated the 51-kilogram division, earning a gold medal, while teammate freshman Sam Eggert, with a 20-second pin in his final match, earned his team a bronze in the 41-kg.

Joe Eggert’s used superior technique over his towering opponents to claim gold in the 36-kg. Senior Panther team captain Devon Weston put together back-to-back wins to claim fourth in the boys 70-kg.

“Weston’s journey is remarkable given the fact he had yet to taste success on the mat prior to this weekend,” said VSS coach Rob Eggert. “To string together consecutive wins and place top-four in such a competitive tourney is truly his wrestling highlight so far here at VSS.”
