Parksville Lawn Bowling Club played generous hosts in the Quality Foods Mixed Pairs Open last weekend, as 32 teams from Victoria to Courtenay took part in the three-day, winner-play-winner tournament.
Ideal weather made for fast greens and near perfect playing conditions, and the Nanaimo pairing of Rick Quibell and Mary Mulligan carted off the top overall title and A division win in a finals victory over Nanaimo club mates Erle and Marian Wallace.
Still, the host club made its presence known, sweeping the B, C and D division titles in the tournament, in which the five-match, winner-play-winner format caused each game to become progressively more challenging.
Bob and Joyce Findlay of Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club placed third in the ‘A’ division with a win over yet another Nanaimo team, Bernice Urbaniak and John Randle.
In Division B, Chris and Martin Fereday of Parksville took first place, edging out Henriette and Eric Bellinger of Oak Bay Lawn Bowling Club.
In Division C, Jon Lansdowne and Sandi Mitchell of Parksville took first, prevailing over fellow club mates Rick Dolley and Cheryl Baker.
And in Division D, Stu and Jan MacNaughton from Parksville came in first, topping Peter Harding and Carol Nelson from Courtenay.
Other finalists included:
Division E: Ken Welwood and Merry Danarti, Parksville; Division F: Dean Thompson, Nanaimo; Division G: Mick Banks and Lynn Chwartacki, Qualicum Beach; and Division H: Ross Younger, Courtenay.
