Parksville Qualicum Beach’s top young golfers will vie for honours at the B.C. Junior Boys and Girls Golf Championships at Morningstar Golf Club from June 29 to July 2.

Leading the PQB charge is Gavyn Knight from Parksville, who aims to improve his 31st-place finish at the 2019 championships. His game has improved since then, having won the Pheasant Glen Open in July and also finishing seventh at the Future Links Fall Series B.C. event held at Crown Isle Golf Club in September.

Last week, Knight scored a promising result, sharing third place at the 2021 Callaway Junior Tour event at Morningstar. He is happy with the way he is playing.

“It’s actually turning in the right direction,” said Knight. “I have been golfing a lot here at Morningstar and I work here, too. So obviously it’s an advantage.”

The other PQB players taking part include Jagre Knight of Parksville and Qualicum Beach golfers Mack Sanderson and Rodrigo Garcia Teruel.

Knight, who goes to Brentwood College in Mill Bay, was pleased to get the opportunity play the Calloway tournament prior to the B.C. juniors. Knight shot a 2-over-par 74. He was even on the first nine but on the back, although he had two birdies, he had four bogeys.

“Just to get that tournament round in just for that environment is pretty big,” said Knight.

Playing regularly on one of the toughest golf clubs on Vancouver Island will certainly give Knight an edge as he know what he needs to be sharp on to tackle the different challenges.

“Probably the short game around the greens,” said Knight. “The rough is pretty thick around here so chipping can be a little bit difficult.”

The Championships, which will have 150 junior golfers coming from across the province, will open with a practice round on June 28.

The first round will get underway at 8 a.m. on June 29. Knight will tee off at 9:50 a.m. He is grouped with the defending B.C. junior boys champion and Team Canada member Willy Bishop of Victoria, and Hudson LaFayette of North Vancouver.
